september chicks

...are the loveliest chicks in the world. i know i may be biased; being a semptember chick myself. but let's face the facts about september chicks: they're not too hot, they're not too cold... they have a flair for the dramatic as well as the playfully comic. they are well-read, and therefore, they 'know what it's all about.' so cheer with me, september chicks... you virgos and a few of you... libras is it? let's show some skin and quote some twain and whitman and london... ! let's prove to these boys, (these boys apt to boorish behavior) that we are, at the very core, ladies. (click to enlarge) by the way, i was only 11 when this issue hit the stands... but i was no stranger to Penthouse even then. god bless america.

happy late birthday, my lord...

father forgive me for i have sinned... i forgot your birthday. july 3rd was the 82nd birthday of filmmaking genius ken russell. (is he 'sir' ken russell yet? i guess he always HAS been 'Sir,' as far as i'm concerned.) yes, the visionary, daring director ken russell has been 'The Great Lord of my Mental and Musical Burlesque' since i was about... eight years old? possibly younger. sitting here, i find it practically impossible for me to adequately express how influential he's been over my work... my dreams, even my Peace of Mind... for as long as i can remember. i think i was about nine when i first saw 'Tommy.' I was never the same. then, sometime around 1980, i happened to see the end to an Isadora Duncan biopic... made for the BBC. at the end of the film, the vivacious dancer is graphically strangled with her own scarf. to death. Ken forced me to face the finality and the folly of such a mortal moment... and, in doing so, he gave me some of the most steadfast terrors of my dainty young life. i will never forgive him for it. and i will never stop kissing his ring in reverent thanks for the very same assault. as long as i live, i will never be able to listen to 'bye bye blackbird' without remembering that beautifully vile close shot. god bless you ken russell. i love you.

'the devils' - grandier's execution: ken russell 1971

here is the harrowing and grizzly-glorious penultimate scene from ken russell's masterpiece, 'the devils.' all performances are perfect. the 'burning flesh' special effects are ahead of their time. everything looks real; despite the artistic take. oliver reed is wrenching and brilliant as the doomed father grandier. michael gothard is manic and flash as the priest. and last, but never least, the miraculous miss georgina hale is gorgeous as the slighted and delighted phillipe; laughing with righteous glee through the leaping flames. and yes, the whole movie is this hard, this cold, this searing, this good.

hello livermush...!

yeah, i gotta give photo credit to my dear sister sarah mccall for this one. i mean, she's the one who took the picture. yes, those charcoal-dark rectangles mean only one thing... you're looking at a deelish paper 'house plate' of browned-on-the-stove neese's liver pudding slices. and i'll bet sarah sizzled them in the skillet with a little bit of real butter, too. mmm, that means the edges are nice and crispy... but the middles still soft and delectable... with that texture that you savor down to the smallest nibblings. wow. they don't even sell this stuff where i live. i mean, i'm lucky i can even get a box of instant grits where i live. i can get decent scrambled eggs... i had some this morning. the only thing the eggs were missing were like, those freeze-dried chive herbs. so umm, for those of you that are lucky enough to be in a 'livermush' region, have a few rectangles for me. yumm!
