jean-lucien just sent me this little picture today. i think its a scream. having been born in 1972, i am very familiar with this 'style-and-or-genre' of illustration. apparently this funky little guy was part of the cover to some 'mod' board game. jean-luc cropped it and just sent me this little lad. i love the 'groovin' pose he's in. and i love the 'i'm doing some serious 'now' dances,' facial expression. i don't think i actually had this kind of thing hanging in my room as a child. i seem to remember some holly hobbie, but not a lot of this stuff. but in fairness, i'd say its pretty well drawn. kinda creepy...and funky!

this was called the mods and it was a paper doll set of mod gogo dancers. the genre was the big eyed sad eyes genre of art that was sparked by california artist margaret keane who was married to walter keane and whose marriage and divorce was filled with big eyed scandal and controversy. the artist of the mods doll set is lee, but there were many other copy cat artists to follow in the sixties and seventies with all sorts of merchandise like figurines, puzzles, banks, planters, fabric, pencil cases and so much more. at one point, i had one of the largest collections in the united states of this style of art including original pieces by many of the artists but had to sell lots of it off for home rehab, and bills and moving around. hope you enjoy the bite of history. love ya.
