its the groovy 'eye' poster!

yes... the groovy eye poster. i found this a long time ago, and i think the print is too small for me to even read well enough to see what its for. but i've had it forever. i think its so cool-looking that i've cut and pasted it into every picture file i've kept on this wild machine. i just love the style, the color and all that. and since i have like, 'zip' real ideas for posts tonight, i figured i'd post it for-all-to-see. for some reason it reminds me of 'a clockwork orange,' ...possibly because of the funky eyelash stuff. and this may be the only thing i post tonight, so i guess its more of a placeholder than anything else. groovy.

d. d.

man, its a lot harder than one might think to find some decent shots of early-era 80's duran duran out there. like, 'nick rhodes headband' era. i was hoping to find a scan of the photograph on the inner sleeve of the original 'rio' album. but hey, apparently that was too much to ask in this hi-tech sleek ultra-modern 'information age.' apparently all the duran fans from the 80's have better things to do than to spend any time making high quality scans of all their memorabilia. hey, thanks for nothing. anyway, here's a shot of 'DD' from one of their more interesting eras. dig it.

go go

... gogo yubari, specifically. delightfully played by japanese actress chiaki kuriyama. she has over 30 works to her credit; not surprisingly, most of them japanese. she plays the knee-socked, mace-weilding schoolgirl-skirted bodyguard in tarantino's virtually flawless 'kill bill.' (vol. 1.) marvelous casting. i think she's great looking.

waiting for godot - lucky's speech : video

an excerpt from the 1987 production made for television. lucky is played by a talented man named alan mandell. the rest of the cast has little to say in this clip. lucky has little to say outside of it.

carnal couple

i'm pretty sure i've posted a shot from mike nichols' 'carnal knowledge' before, but i don't think i've posted this exact shot before. but i figured nobody would suffer if they got a look at the young and foxy and devious and gorgeous mr. jack nicholson and the busty, lusty, gingery miss ann-margret. its been a long time since i've seen this movie. i really should dig it up and give it a fresh look with my modern brain. man, i'm not more than like, 41% gay... but look at that cleavage. woof...! and jack, wow... he was almost at the peak of his looks at the time this was filmed. god, i can only imagine what kind of wire-framed 'pushy-up' bra they put her in to make her chest look like that. i mean, you and i both know, she doesn't need a whole lot of help. and from a cinematic standpoint, i think its notable to mention that this wasn't the only time these two starred opposite one another. yes, i'm sure you'll remember in 'tommy,' ann played tommy's mother, nora walker; and jack played the mysterious 'specialist,' charged with diagnosing tommy's 'problem.' i wonder if she really dug him, or if he got on her nerves? perhaps they were mutually voracious? too bad that sex video hasn't surfaced, am i right, kids? (click to really enlarge)

where are they now?

yes, finger-watches, ladies and gentlemen! i've had this ad for a long time, and i figured it was well worth a post. now, i don't have a date on this ad, so i have no idea if if was 'before' or 'after' the Swatch craze. (jean-luc and i had about four Swatches, just for the record... but my mate Atarieyes mustv'e had like, over a dozen, i remember because he once demonstrated like, four on each arm.) but these little dinky finger watches, i don't remember anyone wearing them at all. and what were they called? 'Digits?' i don't remember any widespread ad campaign for them. i have no visual memory of anyone wearing them. i'm taking a close look at the ad now, and i have to admit, one or two of them look pretty cool... but why not like, use the same desgin and make a 'regular-sized' watch for-the-wrist? i think its hilarious that one of them is like, zebra-striped. how 80's. i kind of dig the fuschia nail polish she's got on... but they don't really seem like, 'practical.' i mean, can you imagine giving a decent backseat 'HJ' with two or three finger-watches on? (and yes, 'HJ" means exactly what you think it means.) the bottom line is, we all know they didn't 'catch on,' because people sure as hell aren't wearing them now. dig it, the 'Digits.' (click to enlarge)

peter's posters

i thought i'd posted all my 'young' shots of peter ustinov, but apparently not. i found this one whilst i was digging around in older files. peter was one of my earliest crushes. in fact, i think i had a crush on his voice before i ever saw his face, and didn't even know it. i remember when jean-luc and i were very young... like, 8 years old, we had this sound recording, on vynil, of the disney 'robin hood' movie. peter ustinov was the voice of the wicked prince john. after all these years, i remember how his voice stuck in my head. i remember even looking it up on the booklet the record came with. it was the accent, the texture, the tone, it was everything. not too long after that, i saw 'evil under the sun.' peter played hercule poirot, of course. i was in love at first sight. it don't know if it was because my young brain actually believed ustinov was solving the murder, i'm not sure. i've always liked smart men. and that voice! mmmm, so lush and complicated. here he is at about age 21 or so, amidst some french theatrical posters. just look at the sturdiness of his body....man, i want to 'jump-him-serious.'

mirror mirror

hey, i'm still not exactly raving with inspiration. but i gotta post something... so um, i guess i'm gonna promote one of my favorite films again. yes, jean-lucien took this lush screen capture quite a while ago. its from roeg's hippy masterpiece 'performance.' in this shot we've got, from left to right... anita pallenberg as the hazy pherba, then chaz's half-disguised reflection in the mirror, then turner's (mick jagger's) reflection reading a book, then chaz himself, with the blood of a magic mushroom sluicing through his brain. yeah, by this time in the movie, chaz is submerging so fast he can't make sense of it anymore. psychedelically speaking. i love the silky colors jean-luc found in the grain. he's really got an 'eye.' (but not like the creepy 'eye' in 'clash of the titans.' ) (?) i like the way he manged to get them all in the same shot. you know, i grew up scrutinizing all the 'movie'-related books in all my school and public libraries growing up, and i always marveled at some of the whunky, bland shots that were used to illustrate the text. jean-luc constantly proves to me that, with a little talent, and affection of the subject matter, you can really get some gorgeous, relevant pictures. (click to gorgeously enlarge)

unexpected fling

yeah, i might as well announce it... i'm having a bit of a fling with british comedy actor chris barrie. a public television channel out of rhode island has been playing his mid-90's series 'the brittas empire,' in which he plays the overbearing, detail-driven, gordon brittas; manager of a not-exactly-thriving english health club. i know, i wouldn't have thought it sounded funny either, but i have to say, mr. barrie makes it not only watchable, but something i've come to look forward to on recent tuesday nights. sure, he does tend to go overboard with the accent and the facial expressions... but he must be doing something right, because he's been creeping into my brain over the last week. so, whilst fishing tonight, i remembered he was also in at least one episode of 'blackadder,' so i dug that up, hoping to get some decent frames of him as an outraged french jailer, but the film stock was like, the worst. and there aren't many shots of him online that aren't from 'red dwarf.' i found this one shot of him, as gordon brittas. ugly enough to turn me on... sigh... i suppose it was only a matter of time.

poster of the unknown

okay, i'm not gonna be able to post a whole lot tonight... i'm still kind of on the hunt for new stuff. i found this a few nights ago, and although i really have no idea what its 'for,' i still thought it was cool-looking enough to include. i like the colors, the psychedelic style, and all that stuff. man, i wish i had more ideas tonight, but... sometimes the inspiration monster isn't exactly knocking my door down. so, dig this, and i hope i have more for you guys tommorrow. i love you all.

sketchy

fan art, ladies and gentlemen, fan art!! hey, actually this one isn't that bad. i mean, anyone can clearly see its duran's john taylor. yeah, really its not so bad. i know i probably drew some stuff that was worse. i had no information as to like, who the artist is. it didn't look like they had to erase a whole lot. i'd bet some bucks a girl did it, though. and she probably did a 'nick' at roughly the same time. so, whoever you are, miss duran artist, i gotta say, not bad.

adam ant - ant rap : video

very hilarious. the song is like, '...huh??' and there's so much whunking craziness going on in both the video and in the song that i can almost not keep track of it all. roll it, see and hear for yourself, and prepare to be highly unclear.

once upon a time

as in, 'once upon a time, adam ant was a dude who actually looked quite pretty.' but man, he doesn't even look like the same person anymore. i guess i shouldn't bag on him too hard, he's given me some great, fun songs over the years... and he did do his 'bit' to further the important 'gender-bending' cause during the 80's. this is, of course, the 'prince charming' cover. i actually like his stuff from that era, including the very hilarious 'ant rap.' which i might have to post. he really made all those ribbons and bows and leather and lipstick look good, didn't he? as most of you probably already know, his real name was the very 'un-glam-sounding' stuart goddard. i imagine it probably took a certain amount of guts to go around dressed like that. or maybe not, i mean, i wasn't living in the UK at the time... maybe the place was crawling with cross-dressing pirates with minimal singing ability. apparently there was also a dance called the 'prince charming,' which was little more than marching around and doing vague, slow, psuedo-military-looking arm moves. so, dig adam at his glammest. its only a matter of time before he gets arrested for something in the 'celebrity headlines.'

one more valmont...

...never hurt anybody. i know i've posted a shot of john-as-val like, very recently, but i came across this one whilst digging through some old files, and i thought it was so 'creamy-and-dreamy' i couldn't resist. man, what a profile! yet another reason for me to invent-and-use a time machine. namely, so i could go back in time and like, do things to him whilst he was wearing that outfit. i know i must've 'screen captured' this one, because i know how hard it is to find shots of john-from-liaisons on the web. there's just something about that ribbon... that ponytail. like, you know you're really 'hot stuff ' when you can make a powdered wig look that good. he's such a 'smooth operator.' (man, why did i say that? ) anyway, enjoy the creamy, mysterious goodness for yourself. hey, there's enough of 'the vicomte' to go around, you know?

glam little wizard

this one is real small, but it gets a yuk out of me. i think it speaks for itself.

playtime again

hey, before i was born! yeah, i don't feel super inspired, but i didn't post anything last night, so i figured it wouldn't hurt if i just threw a rare 'playboy' cover up here. the date is february, 1972. jean-luc and i were like, about a month old, conception-wise. i like the cover, though. the girl looks pretty, and i like the stark profile vibe it has. i also think its kinda funny that the hand touching her has like, big manly hairs on the knuckle and a chunky gold man's ring. like, hey... you can tell that hand doesn't belong to nick rhodes. i picture someone more like, along the lines of burt reynolds or like, i dunno... james caan. (?) anyway, i think almost every playboy cover from that era is worth a look, and i don't think i've posted this one before. and if i did, it was so far back it doesn't make any difference now. so dig it!

old shame

now, i hope this one 'clicks to enlarge' properly. because, in order to really get the ...humor? of this advertisement, you really have to zoom in and read the copy. it looks like it was from the late 20's, early '30's. it tells the story of a young woman's trouble finding a job in a dress shop... all because of an embarrassing personal issue. it must be really far back, because i can't ever remember 'lifebouy' soap ever being marketed towards women in my lifetime. anyway, i think it's a scream. god knows, its like, advertising 101... if you can make the general public, (and especially women) wallow in shame, you can potentially sell them anything. the only thing that would make this funnier, is if the main female was given a first name for the strip. like, 'miss saunders' or 'mabel' or something. poor mabel, she needs to be told the truth-to-her-face. as i said, 'click to read.'
