partymates

you know, some people have said that david bowie wasn't being the least-bit sarcastic with all his 'spaceman,' 'starman,' 'man who fell to earth' stuff. like, some people have gone on record saying they believe he may be an actual alien. and, looking at pictures of him from around this time, its easy to see why they might think something like that. like, here we have a picture of three random guys, gathered somewhere in some backstage location, and bowie, being the oldest guy in years by a lonnng shot, he weirdly looks as if he could be the youngest. like, what does that man wash his face with? like, 'lamb tears' or something? (mmm, yes, 'lamb tears.') as i'm sure you have all figured out, the two blokes he's partying with are gary oldman on the left, and ed norton on the right. and hey, you all know how much i dig gary oldman, but i have to admit he comes in 'dead last' in this three-way facial horserace. like, what's with that 'cat in the hat' scarf? not flattering. but i still dig this shot, because i can't think of any 'hollywood'-related reason why these three guys would be in the same room. like, they didn't all three work on the same movie, did they? like, some movie i'm totally unaware of? well, anyway, dig the shot. nick rhodes...backstage!

yes, i just stumbled upon this gem whilst i was digging around tonight. and i just decided to post it, just for kicks! it appears to be a shot of the very talented and serious nick rhodes... and judging from the color of his hair and stuff, i'd have to say its getting close to the late 80's... possibly arcadia-era. and from the looks of it, he's backstage, draped in all different crazy manifestations of 'fan love.' i see some kind of linen on his lap with strawberries on it. apparently some fan read somewhere that strawberries were his 'favorite food.' i know, i read that same fan magazine, too. and um, he's got some kind of cellophane-wrapped flower in his mouth. and a damn rug on his head, and some kind of fuzzy cartoon guy hangin' on... but i like this picture because it seems to prove something i've suspected about my darling nick all along... he has a sense of humor. and talent. and those slinky-hot lovely, girlish good looks. so rock on, nick... you were my first 'fave,' and you still have a special place in the 'fan lobe' of my teenaged brain.

jack and dustin

yeah, i don't have a lot of background information on this shot, but i couldn't resist posting it. i can guess it's 'backstage' at some kind of high-end hollywood function. i think i remember reading that the girl in the shot was on dustin's arm that night. man, i wish i had a time machine and some kind of recording device so i could find out what the hell jack was saying to him. yeah, i'm sure it was most likely something pretty average. but in my mind, i imagine he was giving dustin complicated directions to a wild, psychedelic shindig at (maybe) dean stockwell's place. maybe he's telling him peter tork and grace slick will be there... as well as, of course, mr. dennis hopper. yeah, dennis hopper...that crazy pill-popper... telling a whopper to the copper, that's our good ol' dennis hopper. no matter what's going on, i still dig this shot. and i hope you'll dig it with me. cool.

b is for backstage

here is a shot from the early 90's... a backstage shot of morrissey and some of his band during morrissey's
'gold lame shirt' phase. the handsome man in the western shirt is morrissey's once-upon-a-time bandmate and collaborator mr. alain whyte. i hope i don't sound too 'slashy' when i say i suspect he and morrissey might've been more than 'just friends.' (assuming morrissey wasn't still officially 'celibate' at the time.) i do love morrissey's music around this period, which gave us hits like 'glamorous glue' and 'we hate it when our friends become successful.' (neither one my favorites, but i'm going by the ones he made videos for.) alain played guitar and even wrote some songs. he was in the band up to the recording of morrissey's most recent studio album 'ringleader of the tormentors,' to which he contributed minimally. (its still an excellent record though, take my word for it.) in the reflection you can also see bass player gary day, and some guy taking the picture. very cool. (click to enlarge)

backstage

another shot of my darling peter ustinov. i don't know very much about what part he was playing when this photo was taken, but i seem to remember it was some kind of foole. i could be wrong. still, he makes the handsomest and most scrumptious foole i've ever seen. he's nobody's fool, that's for sure. so here's another open willing kiss to the late and lovely peter ustinov. may the sugared constellations be entertainment enough for your boundless genius brain on the other side of existence. i love you.
