here is a wild small film from jefferson airplane. i must admit, i don't know much about where it came from, and i also admit i don't know enough to pontificate about how it relates to the 'state of affairs' of today. all i know for sure is it still hits me. i love the wired, heedless attitude of the sound, the rockiness of it, in a geological sense. the politics are, at the most, coincidental.

primus: over the falls - video
if you don't hear something catching in the first 100 seconds, then you're probably not going to.
still, i find their sound hard, tricky, intelligent, and dirty. and i like it.
this throbbing moody track caught me on its barbed hook at once...

kid genius

andy partridge, ladies and gentlemen. a monster of talent. pastoral and savage. finely tuned and completely unstrung. as frightened as he is fearless. having written some of the finest and most complicated pop in the last 25 years, his legend status is undeniable. intelligent and blunt, poetic and obscene, holy and blasphemous at once. his chivalrous heart pounds with rebellious hot blood. a man to hand you daisies on the business end of a bayonet. he writes one hell of a song. his best are too many to list here. but a shortcut to any non-believers is the monumental 'towers of london' from 'black sea.' he plays the harmonica with all the lust and heedless zeal of a prom date in the backseat. and as if all that weren't enough... he's cute.
the first national blessing

for all of you who, in folly, mistake the Monkees as musical lightweights, i beg you to turn your scrutiny towards any and all solo Michael Nesmith recordings. (primarily anything from the double CD 'The First National Band Complete.') his genius bled over into several early Monkee offerings such as 'you just may be the one,' 'papa gene's blues,' and 'mary, mary.' he went on to front the criminally overlooked 'Michael Nesmith and the First National Band,' which produced such monumental songs as 'Silver Moon,' 'Grand Ennui,' and 'Beyond the Blue Horizon.' He is a complicated man on a starry-eyed complicated mission; bringing the ear-licking best country-flavored rock to those few of the masses that dare to pay Attention. God Bless Robert Michael Nesmith. Amen. And Listen to the Band.

xtc

i will come right out and say it... XTC have proven they are every bit as good as The Beatles.
they are like the beatles with empty pockets, an aching head, and a hard-on. listen... to 'no thugs in our house' and 'heatwave.'
there is a sense of strained sinew in their earlier works...not unlike an erection arcing at the confines of cruel, tough zippered denim... and therefore, i celebrate the earliest lineup of XTC.
Quality.
