jiri mucha

i think i've been neglecting the great alphonse mucha disgracefully. its hard to find someone who doesn't recognize his work. some purists may dismiss him as 'candy' because his art has fallen into that 21st century money-making slot of calendars, bookmarks, and greeting cards. i however, think this speaks to his genius. he was largely employed in his day as a commercial artist. one of his most famous works, the dreamy 'JOB' poster was an advertisement for cigarette papers. he also contributed to contemporary magazine covers and posters for art exhibitions. later in his life, he was able to paint what he wanted. his massive works known as 'the slav epic' are large in scale, and breathtaking in overall skill and beauty. this portrait is of jiri mucha, which i believe was his daughter.
