g is for gyo fujikawa

gyo fujikawa was a name i knew at such a young age i didn't (at the time) even realize it was japanese. all these years i imagined gyo as a man, but only tonight... after over thirty years, did i learn gyo fujikawa is a woman. the picture i chose was the picture i was hoping to find. gyo illustrated one of the best children's books of poetry and rhymes that i remember from when i was little. this particular drawing accompanied what i seem to remember was the 'queen mab' speech from 'romeo and juliet.' of course, i didn't know this when i was a little girl, doing my best to lull my busy mind to sleep in what was at best a restless household. out of all the dozens and dozens of fujikawa illustrations, this one always seemed to me to epitomize peaceful slumber. the earthly even tangible comfort of the patchwork quilt along with the ethereal fairy and curliqued plant life served as a safe and cool and mysterious place for my wired mind to go... night after night. gyo, thank you.
