rupert james hector everett

oh, rupert. if you only liked girls. (mmm, like that would improve my chances... like that would improve my 'shot' at him.) i can count the times i fell in love at first sight on one hand. and rupert everett was one of them. it was late '84 or early '85. i remember i was flipping channels one saturday afternoon, and by chance, i landed on cinemax in time to see him in close-up, near the beginning of the 1984 film 'another country.' you have to understand, i was heavily, heavily into english pretty boys at the time. i remember i felt something touch my heart, literally. and i couldn't wait to know his name, and figure out where england had been hiding him. i thought he was 'cute enough to be in duran duran.' then, as he moved and spoke, i discovered his gently whimpering elegant voice... his lean and becomingly clumsy manner. i was so in love. i remember even hunting all the stores in town for completely-round, wire-framed, dark sunglasses like the ones he wore in the 'cricket game' sequence of the film. it wasn't just that i wanted to have him; ...it was more like i wanted to be him. i wanted to live in his body and like, become him. (man, how's that for teenage-maladjusted-indentity-crisis-hormones completely out of control?) yeah, it all seems funny now. i think it was as simple as this: i didn't seem to be having much luck chasing happiness as a poor, awkward, heterosexual, teenage american girl; so i figured i'd have a better chance at happiness as a priviledged, graceful, homosexual, full-grown, young englishman. man, i'm sooo glad i'm thirteen anymore. i don't remember where i found this picture of rupert, but obviously he's around 14 or 15 years old. and beautiful.

hot john

man, what a day. i'm wiped out, even though i didn't really do anything. i can't explain it, but i'm exhausted. and then my cat took off for three hours and scared me to death. she finally came back, though. i wanted to give her a piece of my mind, but she really didn't do anything wrong... just cat stuff. (cut to a shot of my cat 'milkyboots' at the foxwood's casino, playing slots with a cig hanging out of her mouth.) and so, i might not get much posted. so i figured nobody would complain if i slid you guys a cool shot of duran duran's john taylor onstage in 1984. i took this freeze frame from the 'sing blue silver' documentary. i don't really have anything witty or cool to say about it, so just consider it a place-marker with frosted bangs.

marianne faithfull - hier ou demain : video

i love this track. its heavy, its creamy, its groovy, its in french! dig it. truthfully, the low piano notes make up one of the coolest 'hooks' i've heard in years. i find myself playing this one in my head when i'm shampooing my hair. honestly, i do. (seriously, if you've got to unload the dishwasher or feed the cat or something, just leave this on in the background. it peacefully grooves.)

crazy

wow, i just skinned the hell out of the tip of my big toe letting my cat back in to the cabin. she's crazy, and now i have a bleeding toe. but anyway, here's a shot i found of miss ann-margret all painted up and doing the town in some late 60's movie i don't know the title of. and i'm not willing to do any digging to find out right now. hey, all-guys-under-30... this is what a real female body looks like. if you don't like it, educate yourself. she's allll real. anyway, is there anything that says 'late 60's' more effectively than 'psychedelic body paint?' she looks very pretty... but what's with that hooded dude in the background with some arbitrary zig-zag on his abs? and check out the guy in the lower left... i think he knows this is the ultimate high point of his entire existence on earth. i'll bet like, wherever that guy is today, he sits around at thanksgiving dinner and utters the phrase, '...hey, did i ever tell you about the time i was in that movie where they body-painted ann-margret in that yellow bikini? boy, did i have a great view of her can, or what...??'

shameless play

yes, another shameless play for lucynell's attention. she liked the other stuart copeland pics i posted, so i thought i'd slide her one more. its from the same photo session as one of the others. what is he resting up against? some kind of like, musk ox pelt or something? and then there's that persian or central american platter and pitcher thing on stand-by. and i could be wrong, but that cigarette looks 'hand-rolled' if you know what i mean. and if his hair was any more bleached he'd be mae west. yeah, i know that was their 'thing.' and lucy, maybe you can give me a definitive answer on this one, because none of the dudes i asked seems to know. was he english or american? he doesn't seem to have much of an accent. but i've had people tell me he's like, from sussex or something. and others have told me he was born in LA. so maybe you can clear that up for us. and i hope you like the shot. he kind of reminds me of my cousin eric in the face. (and hey, eric, if you're out there, drop me a line. you know who i am.)

playboy in pink

yes, anytime is the right time for some vintage playboy. i don't remember if jean-lucien and i ever had this issue. if we did, i don't think it had the cover on it. but i love it. as i'm sure all of you know, about 99.9% of playboy magazine covers had a bunny head depicted either obviously or hidden somewhere in the photograph. well, hopefully you won't have to look too hard to see the rabbit is seen in the shape of the pillow she's holding. man, what a great-looking comfortable bed she's posing on. hey baby, move over and make some room. (okay, that sounded a bit more lesbo that i meant it to.) she's pretty hot, though. although she looks slightly pissed off. i know how she feels. i'm not a morning person either. i wouldn't be too thrilled if someone came into my bedroom, and jerked open all the windows to flood the place with light. i'd be all like, '...hugh, get the hell out of here...i'm sleeping.' (man, what the hell am i talking about?) anyway, enjoy the chick. this picture is like cake frosting.

more 54

i love this shot. it looks like it was just taken a few moments after another studio 54 shot i posted recently. let's see... it looks like we've got the designer halston on the far right, getting a completely anonymous and risky liplock from some disco 'shim' leaning down into the shot. i wonder if he's gonna remember that in the morning? and then, we've got the exotic miss bianca jagger with only two thoughts going through her mind. the first thought: '...damn, where can i get some more coke?' and the very next thought: '...my hair!!' then we've got the facially-challenged artistic ...genius? andy warhol, with a rare smile on his face. perhaps he just realized he could xerox and color-tint his parking valet ticket stub and sell it for a zillion bucks. and in the background is the chronically-happy miss liza minelli with some bearded dude i don't recognize. hey, it looks like an average night for the folks at the good ol' Studio 54. (and i like that heavily-made up, androgynous, robot-like profile intruding from the bottom right hand corner. i wonder where that dude is today?) (...mmm, 'starbucks' general manager.)

70's anjelica

yeah, the last time i featured anjelica it was a hit. so i figured i'd give her another slot. this was for some make-up ad back in 1973. she looks gorgeous. i'm a sucker for a 70's-styled make-up job. and she's so lovely. i think i remember reading someplace that she had a hard time getting into pictures at the beginning of a career because some studio exec said she had a face like a gnu. ouch. i guess somebody failed to mention her daddy was the big bad movie giant, director john huston. i don't think she looks like a gnu at all. i think she's gorgeous. and wow, what a make-up job, am i right ladies? just stunning. and have you seen her in woody allen's 'crimes and misdemeanors?' she kills in that movie.

a pair of freaks

yeah, that might be a bit cold. you will no doubt recognize these two young lovers. yes, that's mr. mickety-mick jagger in the dress on the right, and the statuesque miss jerry 'hey ya'll' hall in the suit on the right. i don't know why i'm posting this. probably just the freak factor. i mean, i have nothing against either one of them. i actually think jerry looks great. but mick, well... mick looks old and tired and used-up enough to be mistaken for... well, keith richards, actually. still, this shot looks like they have a pretty fun time together. are they still together? or is jerry banging some other english rocker i haven't heard about? anyway, i'm all about clothes swapping and a little gender bending. but man, look at those lines in jagger's face. its like a road map of the back roads in asheboro, north carolina.

library

jean-lucien, lucynell, and myself all grew up in the same small town with the same public library. and thank christ it was a good one. jean-lucien and i didn't know lucynell until we accidentally met in high school many years later. but if i had any money, i'd bet she checked out a lot of the same books from that same library. i have no doubt she remembers the way it looked before they moved and renovated it. i can still walk the children's section in my sleep. and then there was entire world down those steep stairs. all the non-fiction. all the fiction. all the 'young adult' novelettes... all the 'grown-up' books. i cannot even begin to estimate all the hours i killed in that place. i even remember details... like the smell of the disrepaired public ladies' room, and the fact that the air conditioning units would become wet with condesation in the summertime. i remember the beanbag chairs in the children's section. i remember the sound the device made... (i think it was some sort of camera) when they checked out my parent's thick books upstairs. a sound not unlike a polaroid. the women behind the counter would quickly shove a book under there... then a flash of light, that sound, then off to the left, for the ride home. i never in my wildest dreams would've thought i'd work at that library... with many of those same books, in a different and more modern house. i've never loved a job the way i loved that one. but i left it standing at the altar. to this day, i don't know what i was thinking. i could've run that ship.

o-ren ishii

yes, both volumes of 'kill bill' were on today, as i've stated below. i'd seen it before, but wow... i was once again blown away by the chicks in that flick. like the lovely and lethal lucy liu as o-ren ishii. if my brother and i are like any of the villians in that film, then i identify with elle driver, (as you can read below) and i see jean-lucien reflected rather keenly in the guise of o-ren ishii. o-ren is ordered, sure, and ready. with clean lines, crossed t's... exact dress and manner, she is cool elegance... decorating the deadly. she is official. she's powerful. she's beautiful. make no mistake, she is in control, but alas...she is, ultimatley, unable to keep her head. the only thing she's borrowed from me is a small dot on the hollow at the base of her throat.

elle driver

kill bill was on today. both volumes. on cable, on a saturday afternoon, if you can believe it. it was actually a blessing, as sundays are usually my bluest and longest and bleakest day of the week. so the back-to-back tarantino-fest was a welcome distraction. i'd seen it before, so i could follow it while i worked in my notebook. i love daryl hannah in it. as the eyepatched and confident mercenary elle driver, she kicks ass. yeah, i know, that's a boring and predictable thing to say, but she kicks it, some major ass. and even with the eyepatch, i think she's never looked better. strangely, i identify with elle driver. she's ultimately not as swift as she thinks she is... something i'm always afraid i'll find out about myself, with poisonous, flailing consequences. but i do see myself in elle... like, if i could pull out my id and look at it from across the room, i have a feeling it would look a lot like her. only maybe not blonde. and just for the record, i think she's a damn good actress.

church : jefferson airplane - woodstock? : video

i have to admit i couldn't find a straight answer when it came to the title of the song. some sources say 'saturday afternoon,' some sources say, 'won't you try.' still, let's allow grace and her boys take us to church. amen.

jack and dustin

yeah, i don't have a lot of background information on this shot, but i couldn't resist posting it. i can guess it's 'backstage' at some kind of high-end hollywood function. i think i remember reading that the girl in the shot was on dustin's arm that night. man, i wish i had a time machine and some kind of recording device so i could find out what the hell jack was saying to him. yeah, i'm sure it was most likely something pretty average. but in my mind, i imagine he was giving dustin complicated directions to a wild, psychedelic shindig at (maybe) dean stockwell's place. maybe he's telling him peter tork and grace slick will be there... as well as, of course, mr. dennis hopper. yeah, dennis hopper...that crazy pill-popper... telling a whopper to the copper, that's our good ol' dennis hopper. no matter what's going on, i still dig this shot. and i hope you'll dig it with me. cool.

nailing a lie

wow, i'm going wayyy back for this one. i can't tell you how many years ago i made this one... but i know it was at least ten. it was back in my 'primative days.' those days where i had no control over the color, size, and shade of my images. i scoured countless books and magazines, took what i thought i could use, then ripped into them like fresh kills with my scissors. the final image was assembled with nothing but talent and elmer's glue. and i would guess there was some hot steely dan playing in the background. i don't remember where i got the main model. i have no idea who she is. but even after all this time, i still like this one. there are a lot of things i don't remember from that long ago, but i actually remember putting this one together. i was sitting on the hardwood floor of my old bedroom. so, i hope you dig it. like most of my collages from that era, it really only gained 'meaning' after it was done. and this one has something to do with The Inherent Sin of Knowledge. i guess. or maybe its just about smut. maybe they're both the same thing. i don't know. (click to really enlarge)

good-bye paul

paul newman died today. (well, technically yesterday.) i was a fan. this is one of my favorite pictures of him, standing alongside robert redford, outfitted for the 1969 film 'butch cassidy and the sundance kid.' this may be my second favorite picture of him. my all-time favorite image was a portrait my mate jean-lucien drew a long time ago. he drew paul newman from 'the sting.' the likeness was photographic, right down to the cool life in his legendary blue eyes. since i don't have access to that incredible portrait, i decided to use this one. i have some very personal, special memories associated with 'butch cassidy and the sundance kid.' like the weekend i was dogsitting in a great old house for a friend of mine. i was there all alone. that movie was on. i watched some of it sitting up to my neck in bubbles in an old-fashioned claw-footed cast iron bathtub. it kept me from getting the 'house creeps' too hard. man, the house was way out in the woods. anyway, that's only one of the fond memories i have of the great paul newman. i guess its corny to talk about how much i love the bicycle sequence with katherine ross. oh well, enough said, i suppose. sleep well, paul. you did just about everything right and you looked beautiful doing it. thanks.

bryan ferry and jerry hall : price of love - video

i've loved this one since about 1987. i remember it was played on 'night flight' one night, (a cable program that featured music videos and interviews) ...and jean-lucien and i managed to get it on videotape. i remember thinking it didn't exactly sound like anything that was going around at that time... you know, on 'the charts.' but it didn't sound 'old-fashioned' to us either. and it didn't sound like the lilting, tame and dreamy sound of bryan and roxy music in the video for 'angel eyes,' which we'd already seen. no, this video had a rawness about it that wasn't quite metal, and wasn't quite pop. i confess, at the time i was young enough to be puzzled when it came to labeling it as one thing or another. but hey, i know now... its glam rock, kids. dig it. and pay the ultimate price, that price of love. (mmm, and do you think duran duran might've had a look at this clip before they came up with the concept for their video for the song 'my own way'..?? i'm just asking.)

jerry lights up

yeah, i think this might be another shot taken inside the weird and fabled
'studio 54.' i love almost any studio 54 picture. i tried to find that shot of bianca jagger riding a white horse through the discotecque. (mmm, i wonder if the 'white horse' symbolized anything...? (mmm, sniffety-sniff...!) this one is almost cliche, considering the stars are none other than andy 'white bangs' warhol, and jerry 'hey, i'm just glad to be here, ya'll...!' hall. he's lighting her fire. and i'm guessing that was probably the only female fire he bothered to light that night. she looks wonderful, though. she's living proof that southern girls can at least look sophisticated. i look at her gorgeous flowing hair, long legs, strong cheekbones, and fine teeth, and i can't help but wonder what kind of 'deep-south-livermush-and-biscuits collard-greens-and-grits' type foods she ate growing up. and hey, i'm not bagging on that kind of food... i grew up on that stuff myself. and, for what its worth, i have been to the 'studio 54' of my own mind.

patchwork perfect

i seriously hope jean-lucien doesn't mind that i'm posting this one. he made it, about three years ago. using paper as paint, he composed this cool and glorious patchwork of light and color. i loved it then, and i still love it now. he has always had the keenest sense of balance and color harmony. this collage feels pretty to every one of the five senses. i can almost smell and taste it. it has a watercolor-like quality that i absolutely love. not unlike a stained glass window, the light behind it enlivens the arrangement. he's such a genius. its just beautiful. i think it would make a marvelous album cover. and keep in mind, he cuts out and glues everything down by hand before it hits the scanner. what a master. my hero. just gorgeous. (click to enlarge)

54

so, again, this might be the only thing i post tonight. but since its crazy friday night (saturday morning) i thought i'd post this cool shot from the powdered-sugar days of studio 54. man, the mid-90's movie they made about the place was pathetic. there was so much potential there for an incredible visual experience, and it was just about the most flaccid thing i've ever seen on the big screen. (it was right up there with 'memoirs of an invisible man.') i wish ken russell had been able to get his hands on it, and made it a rock musical or something. anyway, this shot shows, from left to right: halston, the designer, bianca jagger in the middle, and little miss snowflake liza minnelli on the far right. man, i think spending the night inside that place, (in its heyday) would've been exhausting. but i dig the pic. nightlife, man. at 36, i think i'm too old for that stuff. i honestly don't think i could keep up. i'd be back in some room on some plush sofa with ice against my chest, begging for some kind of 'downer.' the club scene? you can keep it. in the words of the immortal fagin, from 'oliver!' : "...i'd rather sleep, anyway." (and no, i didn't photoshop that dot on bianca's face... it was already there.)

carnal

okay, i have a bit of a headache tonight, but i didn't want to leave the night blank, so i thought i'd just leave everyone a little love note. i think most of you will recognize the lovely and busty miss ann-margret and the saucy, somewhat scary jack nicholson on their first date from the 1971 movie 'carnal knowledge.' it was directed by mike nichols, and also starred candice bergen and art garfunkel. i haven't seen it in a long time, but i remember digging it very much. i actually think i might've bought it on laserdisc sometime around 1995, if you can believe that. but man...look at that cleave-action, man. some people might say that's 'all push-up bra,' or that its 'all padding,' but umm, we're talking about ann-margret, so i totally think she's doing a lot of the 'work' herself, if you know what i mean. i should try and watch it again sometime. or maybe not. (mmm, apathy is mine.) i love you all very much, and hope to be back in 'full force' soon. kisses.

nightlight

i don't feel like, super-inspired tonight, so this might be my only post. jean-lucien just sent this to me today. it was a collage i made at least ten years ago. the original piece was made from 100% found clippings. that means i took them from various sources, which means i had very limited control, almost no control over the size and contrast and texture and color of the images. and it really doesn't mean anything... but i remember thinking it sort of looked like a girl's dreams from a large deep bed near a candle or some other pale nightlight. jean-lucien just scanned it raw and sent it to me. i only tricked it like, minimally. i just cleaned up some of the edges and tried to make the black a little blacker. the original is about the size of a magazine cover... maybe a little bit smaller than that, because i know it fit in one of those photo albums with those cellophane sheets you slip the picture under, you know. but i still like it, after all this time. but i have almost no memory of actually cutting and putting it together. click to enlarge, and please, excuse some of the rough edges.

silvercher

yeah, as i mentioned below, but i don't exactly have an overload of ideas tonight. but i thought we'd all be able to dig on this admittedly lovely shot of cher, photographed by richard avedon. i kind of feel two ways about cher; kind of the same way i feel about barbra. she can look truly beautiful, as this picture clearly illustrates. and i do think she can act... but, i also think she can be 'unintentionally hilarious' ... like in her late 80's hair serum ads. didn't she do something about some kind of hair smoother? ahhh, it was a long time ago. i'm pretty sure she also put out some kind of exercise video thing. i really wish she'd never gotten any 'work done,' because i have a feeling she would've aged quite nicely. but seriously, i love this picture. i love the silver dress and the pose, and she lends the dress the distant coldness it seems to want. (??) anyway, 'iv'e got her, babe,' on my blog!

wonka-licious

well, i couldn't actually come up with anything really groundbreaking or unusually creative to post, so i thought i'd stay in that very proven ground of 'good-looking guys.' and when you're talking about good-looking guys in the entertainment industry, johnny depp alone is like, 75% of them. this shot is obviously from 'charlie and the chocolate factory.' i think he looks gorgeous as wonka...sort of like a cross between johnny depp, glenda jackson-in-her-prime, and my partner jean-lucien. and bizarrely, i don't think he comes off as 'swishy' in his wonka gear. i think he comes off as just plain crazy. like, insane in a very legal sense. and i consider that a high compliment. you CAN be legally insane, and creative, and rather high functioning; contrary to popular opinion. yeah, i think depp's wonka is certifiable, yet capable, and very glam. i don't think there's a single frame in most johnny depp's movies where someone has said, '...man, he looks like shite in that part.' or like, '...wow, he looks bad there.' i theorize that you could probably go through almost all of johnny's movies like, literally frame by frame, and if you put all the frames wherein he looked 'not-screw-able,' in a box, the box would be about the size of like, a kit-kat. (and just for the record, i didn't take this picture, but i did crop it and trick it.) click to enlarge.

hear me lord - george harrison : video

wow... what can i say? my dark and darling george had it right. so early, he sung with a depth so sincerely cold and scary it felt like a drowning ... so high and light that even one (or two) in the cradle felt like flying, yet so deep and serious, the message retained a context as certain as the grave. and all i can say is thanks.

a different drummer

well, maybe not so different. i can't remember where i found this wonderful shot of stewart smoking, below a fragmented lute and a blunt-edged mirror. he bleached his hair back then, didn't he? i mean, was that not part of the 'police' concept? and, forgive my ignorance, lucynell, but wasn't stuart born 'over here?' anyway, in this picture, he looks like he's 'cooling down.' i can't help but wonder how badly his hands hurt... how his champion knuckles ached... and his radius wrist bones complained after a loud night of banging out charted hits... all for the deep pockets of the middle-class 20 year-old grey fedora, torn yellow t-shirt chicks in the audience. i love this shot.

covergirls

okay, i don't think i've posted this one yet. its one of those shots i don't really feel like i need to comment on. i mean, it more or less speaks for itself, body-language-wise. it looks as though its 'post-injury' for mr. mark hamill, because it looks like his 'empire' face is on. and man, just look at how he's desperately clutching onto the purple crepe of carrie's skirt as she leans in, hard and nuzzly, against the forehead of mr. harrison ford. i think we know who had a little 'bit of fun' in between episodes 4 and 5. god, it looks like mark is clutching her female upper thigh like it was the last one he was ever gonna be that close to. ford looks pretty relaxed, though... like as if he knows his 'night schedule' is all set, 'fisher-wise.' and lando? well, lando's just glad to be there. may the force be with us all.

stylish shelley

yeah, i don't know how this one's gonna hit. i am soooo sleepy. and i dig shelley duvall. (well, up until she got into making those faerie tale theater things for kids... kids get enough, trust me.) i think she's great in 'annie hall,' i think she's great in 'three women,' i think she's great in 'the shining,' and yes, i think she's great in 'popeye.' and she was in 'time bandits,' too... but i've only seen her parts like, fleetingly, whilst searching for the bits with ian holm. no, but seriously, i think she's damn good. its hard for me to swallow the fact that some people think she 'overacted' in 'the shining.' as if its possible for someone to chew on the 'scene-bone' more unabashedly than jackety-jack 'little pigs' nicholson. i defend shelley. i think she's pretty and dark and smart and has given me many nightmares, just imagining her in that blue bathrobe, running frantic around the Overlook with that butcher knife in her hand. man, just writing this has put me in the mood to roll it, 'the shining.' but, as fate would have it, the only kubrick movie i own on my shoestring budget is, happily, 'barry lyndon.' (just for the record, i love the long, white dress on the left. and the boots are deelish. not that i have the 'stringbean' bod neccessary to pull it off... far from it, but it looks nice and comfortable.)

wristband

okay, i'm real tired. since i've gone back to manual handwriting for my daily journal, i haven't had a lot of time to go pearldiving. in a way, its a good thing, because i get to feel the paper and the ink and the glue in my soul... but it IS more time-consuming. but i like the sensation of having it in my hand. and the muscles in my hand and arm that twitch when i'm working seem to send peaceful chemical signals to my brain. which has got to be a hell of a lot less expensive than my goverment approved 'crazy pills.' but, the end result is that my picksh beds are low. so, you're getting another shot of simon le bon. this is a still from the 'sing blue silver' tour documentary, where he makes a big deal out of getting hold of a wristband. he's still cute, though. but i have to say once again that the film quality and photography on this dvd transfer sucks chrome. (click to enlarge)

schin-fully delicious

yeah, i know... my lame, juvenile play-on-words cheapens the very real reverence and value of the 'schindler survivors,' but i just wanted to post a pair of hot guys, so sue me. you'll see from the post below this one, that i needed to re-establish my 'straight' after featuring the flirty little female. so hey, dig on the great profiles of ralph feinnes and liam neeson. and i think its fair to say neither one of them ever looked better than they did in 'schindler's list.' i guess it was the costumes. all those quality cottons and silks and wools and cufflinks and tie tacks and neckties and... i hate to admit it, but i guess there's some truth to that 1980's maxim... you know, the one about the 'sharp dressed man.' i know ralph had to gain like, 30 pounds to play the part, and if you ask me, he never should've lost it. i love the plumpness of his face and cheeks and chin. and i even think he looks just fine with his shirt off. mmm, ralph... gimme somethin' to grab for. ...like that cheesy old ric okasec song! (man, why did i write that last bit down?)

gone fishing

okay, this might very well be the only thing i post tonight. my lobster traps (picture files) are light, so that means i need to take a night or two off for fishing and pearldiving. so, in the meantime, allow the lovely miss ashley cox to hang that 'do not disturb' sign on this virtual door. i love, love, love that salmon-colored satin garter belt, her powder-pale skin, and her sleek shoulder-length smartly-cut hair. it looks like she's got a hell of a slumber party planned. so i say, 'hey ashley, let's order up some coffee-flavored dessert, play dress-up; gossip and watch jeopardy, and maybe talk about some girls we don't like a whole lot.' then... a pillow fight, maybe? okay, i'd better keep this short before i sound completely non-straight. and i think i need to post a shot of a hot guy, just to like, keep things balanced. but chicks, man... they just don't make 'em like they used to. (click to enlarge... and please don't flag me or complain, they're only 'human boobs.' thanks.)

church : barbara harris from altman's 'nashville' - it don't worry me - video

miss harris is going to take us to church. god bless us all. amen.

late birthday girl

well, i tried to get this in on time, but it looks like i was about 55 minutes late. september 19th was the birthday of the very 'cool-in-my-book' twiggy. she was born on september 19th, 1949 in england and given the name leslie hornby. and i don't even think about the whole 'skinny' or weight thing when i think about twiggy. i think that shortchanges her. she's always struck me as being a talented, beautiful, and happy girl. this cool shot was taken from what was her only major starring role in a motion picture. (as far as i know.) in march 1972, she starred in the genius ken russell's film production of the stage musical 'the boyfriend.' the first time i watched it, i was bored unless there was a musical number going on. but the more i watched it, the more i liked it. twiggy plays a young, dreamy, practical stagehand named polly browne, who ends up on stage for a sparsely-attended matinee after the star becomes unavailable. the movie's really long, but if you have the patience for some paced, somewhat dated storytelling, you'll be lucky enough to enjoy the several dazzling busby-berkely-reminiscent, larger-than-life musical numbers. it also features groovy appearances by christopher gable, glenda jackson, max adrian, tommy tune, murray melvin, vladek sheybal, and yes, the one and only, gorgeous and legendary, cool and glamourous, sleek and sultry miss georgina hale, who actually steals one number near the end of the film in her dazzling pink sequined dress. (hey, i might have to post that number later, if i can find it.)

le bon in action

here's another shot i took from 'sing blue silver.' he's singing one of their best earlier songs, 'is there something i should know?' as i mentioned in the nick-post below, the film stock was a total uncooperative bitch, but i did the best i could. all the footage is like, shaky-hand-held-camera-fied, which isn't great to get shots from in the first place, but the film is so slow, so getting something not-blurry was a real challenge. but i think i got pretty lucky with this one. and just for the record, i think his 'uniform,' or costume for that tour suited him well. i'm kind of surprised some version of that white jacket with the black-striped collar never made it to the hip clothes shops, you know, like that tomato-soup colored michael jackson 'beat it' jacket did. i'm surprised i never saw one hanging in 'merchants' in four seasons mall. wow, i still love simon le bon... but have you seen him lately? i hate to say it, but i suspect he's had some 'work done.' chemical-peel le bon. (?) click to enlarge.

nick smokes

okay, this site has been giving me problems for the last few minutes, so i don't know how intricate this entry will be. but anyway, last night i was watching the 80's duran duran tour documentary 'sing blue silver.' and since it was rolling, i decided i should try to get some shots from it... but man, that was some of the laziest, slowest, grainiest, worst film-slash-videotape stock i've ever worked with. its like, every bit as bad as 'evil under the sun.' i mean, it was the haziest, shallowest film i've had the displeasure of wrestling with for quite some time. but i DID manage to get this shot of the young nickety-rhodes, at a radio interview, priss-dragging on what looked like a camel... but the film stock was so poor i really couldn't tell. it did have a brown filter area. he's a cutie, am i right folks? and he's known to have a bitchy side too. (...nick rhodes? how can that be?) anyway, let me just see if this post sticks, and if it does, maybe i'll post something else... after i have MY evil Camel-on-the-deck-under-the-stars.

mmmm...velvet

so... 'velvet goldmine.' i sooo feel two ways about this movie. i guess you could say i 'go both ways' where 'velvet goldmine' is concerned. the cast is wonderful. the songs are fantastic. the costumes are flawless. the subject matter has stellar potential. but, the movie itself, like, the final product is one of the most lopsided movies i've ever liked enough to own. the plot is so weak and who-cares, that you find yourself not even feeling guilty for not caring about it. if you ask me, the whole 'popstar gets shot, who dunnit' aspect is totally extraneous, and a bad idea in the first place. if todd haynes had called me first, i would've advised him to take the same cast, same crew, same vibe, and make a wild, stylized mockumentary about brian slade and kurt wilde, mandy, and the rest of the gang. you could still have all the music, all the drama, all the historic context, and all the sex, drugs, and rock and roll, without the limp-dicked, wet-washcloth excuse for a murder mystery. the opening credits sequence is one of the most invigorating i've ever seen... indeed the entire first hour or so is practically perfect... but i hate to see christian bale so underused and rendered so boring as he is in 'goldmine.' i mean, in the 'flashback to the 7o's' sequences, he's marvelous and spot-on, but in the 'now he's a reporter' sequences, i couldn't even pay myself to care. oh, and eddie izzard's oddly enough, NOT in make-up or drag! oh, by the way, the shot is of johnathan rhys-myers as brian slade during the video of his hit, 'the ballad of maxwell demon.' great f***ing costume. (click to enlarge)

mmmm...moulin

okay, i have to admit, the first (and actually, mostly only) time i saw 'moulin rouge,' i was more or less blown away by it. but i think my reaction was about 80% 'induced' if you know what i mean. i just remember a loud, long dazzle of red and blue and a lot of lacy, glittery heartshapes. and i remember ewan singing. oddly enough, i don't remember much of anything about boring miss kidman. i don't think she's done any work that comes close to 'dead calm.' (man, what a boring thing for me to say.) but i was impressed with the fact that ewan did his own singing. and he's very 'easy on the eyes.' i gotta admit, though... i'm not a huge fan of baz luhurmann. i didn't get anything out of his 'romeo and juliet' but a headache. i probably should give 'moulin' another sober chance, but i'm just not sure if i 'can-can-can' free up the time.

baby brooke

ummm, so i'm still dealing with just an iceberg tip where my picksh are concerned. but i did just re-snag this shot of a young teenage miss brooke shields. now, when i was growing up i remember movies like 'pretty baby' and 'king of the gypsies' on HBO. i remember my mother talking about her, you know, that whole issue of over-sexualizing children that seemed to blossom in the media around that time. at the time, like around the time of 'endless love' and 'the blue lagoon,' i remember her being so famous and so glamorous, and i knew how young she was. i wanted to be like her... i wanted to look like her. even at that age, i remember realizing her acting 'chops' weren't the greatest, but i did love the way she looked. and i loved all the attention she got. hey, i just remembered her being in that awful movie where she was a runaway that was befriended by george burns so she could avoid apparently being killed by some criminal ex-boyfriend. what was that movie called? oh yeah, was it 'just you and me, kid?' or 'here's lookin' at you, kid?' wait, i'm gonna look it up. okay, 1979, and it was 'just you and me, kid.' apparently the 'cute' tagline was: 'the story of two juvenile delinquents.' oh, i get it... its a cute joke, 'cause he's old. and the synopsis reminds me she was running away from drug dealers. oh, and how's this for a supporting cast? lorraine 'jaws, mrs. brody' gary, burl ives, ray bolger, and christopher knight! (?) and hey, what a surprise, its not out on DVD yet!

roxy music - amazona : video

hey, i'm not certain what year it was, and i'm not sure what show they were on... but i do know i love the hard, dreamy, candyfeathered sound... ohhh yes. let bryan 'take you there.'

pent up

penthouse magazine, ladies and gentlemen. i grew up with a seemingly endless supply of penthouse magazines from the 70's and 80's at my disposal, and you'd better believe jean-lucien and i read every one of them. and yes, i mean we actually read them. i've mentioned before that our stepfather had crates full of 'girlie magazines' on the screened-in porch, which we systematically adopted. (the magazines, not the porch.) (mmm, no kidding.) i thought it was really groovy to have an equal amount of playboys and penthouses... it was kind of like dating twins, and one of them may not have been as clean, but she was blessedly just a little bit sluttier than her sister. playboy seemed like, like a well-made american corvette, whereas penthouse was like a quick, slick, and tricky japanese import. i mean, your heart might've been with the corvette, but man, that mistubishi was fast!! and her doors closed so tight! (mmm, can you tell i've been up past my bedtime?) anyway, this is one of the prettiest and clearest penthouse magazine covers i could find. too bad they don't sell like, digital 'page-by-page' copies of 'forum' and 'variations,' because i know a girl who could cash her check right there... namely, me. set

okay, this is obviously a shameless play for lucynell's attention. hey, its the slim and expert mr. stewart copeland, right where he belongs; namely, behind his drums with his mouth shut. okay, so that last part was just mean. actually, i've heard stewart talk, and he seems like a pretty bright and lucid guy. he's always reminded me of my cool older cousin eric. and those striped shirts? you know they were so popular in those days, and actually, he looked pretty good in one. in fact, from this moment on, i might have to refer to that kind of top as a 'stewart copeland shirt.' and i've never heard of him being a real asshole, maybe lucynell can help me out here... like, are there any infamous stories of him like, getting pissed in front of 15 thousand people and like, dropping his sticks and walking off in standard, 'shove it, i don't need this!' -fashion. hey, i don't know all that much about 'police' lore, but it always sort of struck me that if one of those three guys was gonna 'rag out' and be a prima donna, then it would be sting, and sting alone. but hey, like i said, lucynell, correct me if i'm wrong. do you have any juicy 'policedrama' dirt to dish?

remember kids...?

yes, this is the movie poster for 'the legacy.' i remember seeing this image like, on posters, and on those glossy slick paperback books that hit the shelves at roughly the same time. it creeped me out, like, seriously. i didn't even know what the word 'legacy' meant at the time. and, even though i loved cats, that yowling, white, disembodied cat head didn't exactly make sugar plums dance, i promise you. in fact, i think i even laid awake in my bed one night, after having seen the book cover at the grocery store. i had this sick-scary image of the cat head like, coming to life in the dark and-closed-for-the-night grocery store, and like, i imagined it jumped off the book, and like, 'spider-walked' down the street on its craggly 'human-hand'-legs, marching straight for my house, like, letting out little evil tortured cat mewls all the way. and i knew 'the way' to the store so well, i remember trying to like, imagine in 'real time' which houses it would pass on its way to come and 'get me.' i even imagined the humming sound of the streetlights when it passed underneath one. it marched past johnson street elementary, then straight up to lexington, screeching, and i think i maybe even saw it with a little purplish lightning-filled 'storm cloud' imploding over its head. even with all that vivid imagination going on, i can't remember ever deciding what it was gonna do to me once it got all the way to my bedroom door. i think at the time, i figured it was creepy enough if it just stood there, silently, outside my door in the hall, so i could see the disturbance in the stripe of 'light-under-the-door,' and know it was out there. man, i was crazy then, and i'm eeeee-crazzzy now! (oh, and hey, now that i read the fine print, it looks like roger daltrey's in it, man! )

fisher smokes...and tells

yes, we all know miss carrie fisher has a wild side. we've all seen her come on strong with warren beatty as a teenage temptress in 'shampoo.' we all know about her going all the way to '...the edge,' but apparently, she went all the way in other areas, too. i just heard today that carrie is writing another 'tell-all' book. and in it, she supposedly reveals how she and the 'real han solo,' mr. harrison ford, used the force, namely, the sex-force to heat up the 'space' between them during the filming of 'star wars.' hey, in a way, its almost like, 'tell me something i don't know.' i mean, personally i woulda bet she banged them both. and maybe chewbacca. but not C-3p0, we know he's not all that 'into' chicks. i mean, why do you think he's always with that other male robot that comes up to like, waist-level? (mmm, lame joke)

the johnsons

so it seems like my past posting of a young and undressed anjelica huston was a big hit, so i decided it would be cool to post a groovy shot of the somewhat-nude couple under a haze of gauze. the dude on the bottom, with 95 percent of his clothes on is don johnson. and yes, that means the barely-old-enough-to-consent chick on top is none other than miss melanie griffith. wow, she really was beautiful, wasn't she? but um, have you taken a look at her recently? yikes! i hate to be mean to such a mod and free-swinging sister, but she's a walking plastic factory. and its a shame, because i can't imagine she would've aged badly on her own merits. i mean, tippi (her mom) hedren looked pretty good for a long time, and i don't think she had a lot of artificial help. and hey, don johnson still looks okay last time i checked. i miss this hazy, soft, super-diffused style of photography. i don't think its a cop-out, really, because if you don't have a fair amount of 'basic goods' in the first place, a hazy filter isn't going to help much. and hey, i miss real panties! i dig this shot, its great. they're so in love! sigh... (click to enlarge)

cass elliot - california earthquake : video

i love this one. it's sure, smooth, groovy and catching... with a drop of protest and social awareness... just how i 'late 60's' -like it.

snake

i love snakes. i don't care what anyone else thinks, i love 'em! they're slinky and cool and sly and strong and affectionate and expressive. this shot is from stanley kubrick's masterpiece 'a clockwork orange.' in short, this is one of alex's snakes. i don't know if i've got a screw loose or something, but a tame snake doesn't scheeve me in the least, but bugs-and-or-anything with more than four legs? you can keep it the eff away from me. i even like snakes more than dogs or birds or fish or anything else except cats. i'd even rather keep a snake than a rabbit or a damn skanky ferret. and guinea pigs? you can keep'em. i kind of like hamsters, but i'm not great at taking care of them. i've never had a gerbil, but i can't imagine i'd be too thrilled. snakes are great, though... they seek out your body-warmth and dig to loud music. if i had endless money, one of the first things i would get would be a snake. and i'd name it 'scaley mills.'

evita

its literally difficult for me to remember a time when i wasn't aware of 'evita.' i remember there were ads for the touring production on local tv back in the very early 80's. (if not 70's.) there was even a new york bus in the first 'superman' movie that bore an 'evita' ad on top. i actually think i remember hearing the phrase 'don't cry for me argentina' before i even really understood what a broadway musical was. then, in 1988 (or thereabouts) 'the phantom of the opera' came onto the scene. i was totally hooked by the entire 'phantom' phenomenon. it was very soon after that that i learned andrew lloyd webber was also responsible for the mysterious-sounding 'evita.' so... i found the double cassette of the original broadway cast recording in some low-end record store and bought it. and to this day, it remains my favorite broadway musical. but only patti lupone's version. starring alongside her in that legendary production were mandy patinkin (as Che) and the underrated bob gunton (the warden in 'shawshank redemption') as the dictatorial juan peron.

julie in boots

okay, i don't really have a clever way in to this post. but hey, how can you not dig on of my favorite 60's swinging chicks, miss julie christie, posing in a pair of black patent leather boots! i love this shot. i love the rose-colored background, i love the curly-ponytail hairdo... i love her 'now' low-hanging pendant, and i love the playful look on her face. she's a serious actress who knows what she wants, namely a swinging time with some hot boots and cool locks! and a little frosty pink lip gloss never hurt anyone! miss julie is at the top of my list! she's one of those chicks i thought was a dog when i was growing up... but after my mind was expanded and my tastes evolved, i came to realize the timeless quality of miss christie's looks. personally, i've never been able to pull off the frosted muted lipstick thing, but miss julie practically wrote the book. she kills as mrs. miller in altman's 'mccabe and mrs. miller.' she was devastating and sad in roeg's 'don't look now,' and she was every bit the part as gertrude in branagh's 'hamlet.' but she snagged the oscar for best actress in the heartbreaking 1965 john schlesinger film 'darling.' if you've never seen 'darling,' i suggest you set aside a rainy evening around 6 pm to roll it and get into it. she kills.

the prince and the cig girl

yes, tonight's featured smoker is none other than the lovely and legendary miss marilyn monroe. for those of you who don't know, the man 'lighting her fire' is the overrrated knight himself, sir laurence olivier. obviously, this was around the time they filmed the excellent 'the prince and the showgirl.' out of all the names marilyn had on screen, i liked the name of her character in 'showgirl' the best; she was called elsie marina. the first time i watched it, i was bored; the second time, i was mesmirised by her white dress; and the third time, i was really wooed by the entire thing. i think olivier actually tries to show some 'humor.' and marilyn's wordless performance in the church sequence is nothing short of thunderous. i don't for one minute suspect that she and olivier 'made it real' like, 'behind the scenes,' if you know what i mean. i think they both had other things on their minds... namely, arthur miller and danny kaye. but whoahhhh, look at norma jean suck on that cig! drag on, miss baker...! you rock! vipe it!

art of dance

i haven't posted anything by my hero alphonse mucha in a long time, so here goes. he did a series of illustrations on the Nine Muses of Art, and this chick was done to represent the art of dance. it isn't my favorite mucha, but i do love it. and i was lucky enough to find a nice big clear version of it. when i was a little girl, jean-lucien and i found a book that belonged to my mother... or was it a calendar? i think it was a book. anyway, it was all about alphonse mucha. and it was love at first sight. his work had a style my young mind could relate to... all the thick black lines around the bodies and other forms, it was reminiscent of the lines in my favorite coloring books. it had a stained glass aspect i liked very much. and there were words, as on the famous JOB posters. the girls were so dreamy and curvy and lovely in their gossamer gowns, like goddesses. the colors so effortlessly harmonious. so tranquil, yet titilating. so sure of themselves, so finished. about eleven years ago i went to a museum in raleigh, north carolina to see an exhibition of authentic alphonse mucha art. i was able to get close enough to see actual pencil lines and corrections. i believed his very dna was probably embedded in some of those works. for me, it was a religious experience. and i thank my friend kathy for accompanying me. viva le style

yeah, i don't know why that's the title... i guess its as good as anything else. yes, once again i am doing this on a very limited picksh pool. but i liked this spread when i found it, so i figured you guys might dig it too. i like the girl on the left. i don't think it's twiggy. she looks like twiggy, but i don't think its her. i love that shady look with those small hats with black netting. i like the flower on it too. hey, true story, one time when i was still in middle school, i remember somehow i got my hands on a hat like that with glam netting on it, and in my hormone-crazed 13 year old brain, i thought it would be a good idea to wear it to school with a dark colored sweatshirt and jeans. as soon as i got on the bus, i was beginning to think it was not such a hot idea. i don't remember how long i had the balls to keep it on for, but i don't suppose it was very long. i don't have very clear memories of wearing it like, to lunch or anything, but i DO remember the bus ride, and the unclear 'looks' i got when i got off the bus in front of all the other kids like, right at the big bad entrance-and-stairs. why does your brain make you think stuff like that is cool when you're that age? sigh... oh well, i'm probably the only one that remembers it now. i should like, 'zen' let it go.

dazzling plastic

so, i know jean-lucien will remember this, but i'm not so sure about anyone else. i had this toy. and for months i'd been trying to find a picture of it on the wild web. and quite by accident tonight, i stumbled on it. as you can probably see, it was for use with the 4 1/2 inch fashion dolls, like glamour gals. wow, if you click to enlarge, you can see the cool illustrated backgrounds of each 'room' in the groovy disco-themed doll pad. i have to admit, i still dig the purple and hot pink and sunset orange theme of the decor. i seem to remember one was a bedroom, a livingroom, a salon? and i think a place with a dance floor and a little orange plastic jukebox. see the rounded 'awning' parts atop the entrance of each room? well, i remember the slim fruit-stripe colored stickers that went across that part were always like, curling up and threatening to come off... but only on that awning-part, for some reason. i think you can see near the bottom that all four sections could be brought together, and the curvy parts on the top of the white frame made like, a little carrying handle. man, seeing something like this makes me realize just how many days and months and years i've been alive. i wonder if mine is still up in my mother's old attic?

miss mia smokes

so i just came in off the back deck to inhale a camel filter. the new england moon was so full and silver bright it was casting sharp shadows of all the leaves on the trees. the air is cool and dry. i love it up here. but i am not alone in blazing a deathstick. here is a great shot of a hippy miss mia farrow in her groovy late 60's pad, enjoying a 'straight' in her own free and short-haired independent way. i love the room she's in. it reminds me of the infamous 'shakespeare house' on centennial street. there was a lot of smoking going on in that house, i promise you. i like her hair darker like that. it looks like she's killed almost a full glass of red wine, too. when i see photos like this, i really wish i had a time machine. i wonder who she was hanging out with? i wonder who was taking the picture? it looks like a pretty groovy scene. rock on, miss mia.

...oliver reed's!

'...all major credits cards...accepted!' okay, so i apologize for opening with an 'in-joke,' i realize that's rude. but hey, judging from the photograph, it does look like we're stopping in at oliver reed's. "...jus' for...a lit'le noightcap...!" hey, i don't mean to bag on oliver reed. i can proclaim with dead seriousness that i am one of his biggest fans. i think its fair to say the first thing i saw him in was 'tommy,' on HBO when i was a kid. even then, i remember being frightened and impressed with his brooding, intense, almost psociopathic portrayal of 'uncle frank.' in more recent years i've seen him shine with true acting ability in gems such as ken russell's 'women in love,' and in ken russell's horrific, gorgeous masterpiece, 'the devils.' but in this shot, it looks like he's working on the very challenging role of 'kicking back' and 'taking it easy.' hey, are those some serious cushions or what? and wait, why is he opting to get shitfaced with all that natural sunlight coming in? hey, maybe he's on a BBC talk show. and, if that's the case, i'm sure they realllly appreciated him slurring-it-up-live. hey, honestly, god bless you, oliver. peace.

haircut 1971

okay, again i must beg everyone's patience. i don't have enough picksh to continue with my countdown, but i'm still trying to skate forward, unafraid, and post whatever i've got day by day. so, speaking for myself, i've always gotten a kick out of reading through the old magazines and big, thick hardcover books they have available for you to flip through in salons whilst waiting for your turn. some of the styles are just outright sucky. some look real dated, some are just plain unflattering, and some look alright in the book, but would be a virtual impossibility to create on your own after you get it home and wash it. this cut falls into the last category. actually, i like this hair. i like the length and the dark silky curls and the way the straight bits on top frame her face. but you guys know as well as i do, that this style almost doesn't exist in real life. first of all, you'd have to walk around with your eyes closed and your head tilted to the side in order to 'make it work,' and maintain the illusion. but i think like, if i was only going to sit still for 30 seconds and have my picture taken, i think i could pull it off.

pop

yes, another one of my favorite things; namely cosmetics ads from the 70's and 80's! now, i realize the copy says 'think pink,' and the nails look purple. actually, they looked a lot pinker before i tricked it. but when i left it raw, the girl's skin was so dark and orange and just looked awful. i like the ad very much, though. i love the pose, and the one-in-a-hundred perfect gum bubble. man, because of my bike-chain-resembling teeth, i don't chew bubble gum anymore. and even when i was a kid, i wasn't too big on gum. i mean, you can't eat it. so as a 'sweet treat' it always left me wanting more. even when i was younger and watched the original gene wilder willy wonka, i remember not really identifying with violet beauregard. gum? she was all about gum? you can't even swallow it, and it comes in mostly fruit or mint flavors, which weren't what i was thinking when i was thinking candy. i liked chocolate, peanut butter, vanilla, butterscotch, and standard whipped cream. i was also the kind of kid that drew a distinction between ice cream and sherbet. and i've never understood people who put jello and pudding on the same 'shelf.' like, pudding is ten times better and more luxurious than jello. hey wait, i'm supposed to be talking about nail polish. i can't remember the last time i painted my nails. i'm just not a 'get your nails done' french manicure type of chick. anyway, i thought the ad was cool, so dig it.

smoking miss christie

hey, i'm pretty busy tonight... trying to rebuild my files, but as i mentioned last night, i want to meet my goal of at least one post each night. so, in keeping with my 'smoking stars' series, dig on this mod shot of the lovely and very '60s' miss julie christie, taking a deep ah-draggity-drag on a long, brown, not-usually-intended-for-ladies 'rawhide' variety cig. have you seen miss christie lately? she looks great. i've never smoked a brown cig, but i would if someone offered. i mean, as stupid as it sounds, as long as i'm still an active smoker, i'd try anything. i remember one time i was at four seasons mall in greensboro, north carolina with a high school wrestler i was dating at the time. i think he must've been trying to impress me, because he stopped in the tobbacco gift shop and made a pretentious point out of buying some exotic-strong european cigarettes called like, Dortmunders or something i'd never heard of. (and you know it was a long time ago, because he was able to light up right there in the mall.) so, he smoked as we walked around, and it was very clear early on that they were a little too much for him. he started coughing and volunteering such comments as, '...wow, these are stronger than i thought they'd be..." (cough, 2-3-4) "...but that's cool, i like them strong." mmm, i didn't ask. and if i remember correctly, after he'd burned through two of them, this six-foot tall wrestler had to like, take a break and sit on a big planter, saying he was "...just a little light-headed." i think he made us leave soon after that.
