satis-factory

when asked about andy warhol, i have mixed feelings. it is impossible for me to deny his tremendous, even groundbreaking impact on the world of modern art. still, i think he got really, really lucky. he landed at just the right time, with just the right vibe. at no other time in history would his excuses for art have been accepted and even hailed as actual art. and so, i find myself jealous. if his stuff rocked the world and practically deified him, why isn't MY stuff similarly hailed? then, i have to remind myself, that if it hadn't been for 'weird art' pioneers such as Warhol, then there'd be even less of a path and audience for MY (our) psychedelic, unconventional stuff. i have to remind myself that he dared to push the concept of 'what passes for film,' ...paving the way for the visionary directors i enjoy to this day. and i must keep in mind that his experiments in 'cross-pollenating' from several pop culture 'hives' and disciplines to create new, free, original hybrid schools of Art are almost directly responsible for my large, inclusive embracing of the 'cut-up' method on an almost phantasmic scale. i'm not making any sense, am i? well, Andy might've been able to dig me. as much as i could sit here and 'bag' on him, i DO hope he digs me. Us. i hope he's out there somewhere, going: "...wow, those guys have the right idea... they're following the righteous path..." i can only hope so. (click to enlarge)

sporty spice

hey, twins, man, twins...!! here we have twin sisters yvette and yvonne sylvander, on the cover of 'sports illustrated' back in january 1980-something. now, ladies and gentlemen... THOSE are bathing suits! i almost can't decide which one i like better. personally, i prefer to wear one-pieces, on account of my high waist and all. but these chicks don't appear to have any figure flaws to be concerened with. and fortunately for us, this picture is old enough that chances are, the girls are real... (maybe there's been a little airbrushing, but not much more.) i mean, they obviously don't have those fake-ass bubble boobs... i hate those. like, what's wrong with soft, sudsy boobs? like, when did they go out of style? plus, you know i love it when cheesecake girls look like they're genuinely happy and having a good time. and hey, they're twins! like, who could ask for anything more? just a great summertime picture. dig it.

stars and hits

i've gotta give my brother jean-lucien big credit for this one; on account of he found it, tricked it, and sent it to me. again, its a super-cool magazine cover, and once again, its hard for me to remember if i had this one. i know i probably had at least one friend who had it. if jean-luc and i did have it, it was early enough that we were more concerned with getting the pin-ups on the wall, and less concerned with preserving the magazine intact-for-the-future. obviously, the duran duran lads are the big stars here. and real quick, while we've got the lads in front of us, let's see who wins the horserace! mmm, you know, i might meet some differences of opinion on this one, but i'm gonna have to say nick. yeah, in my opinion, sweet nick rhodes wins the prize. but it should be said that its a pretty good picture of all of them. okay, judgement out of the way, let's see what other features this issue boasts. hey, according to the upper-left corner, we get a groovy pull-out of the lads in spandau ballet. and for some reason, i think its funny that the words 'sony walkman' are on the cover at all. like as if a walkman was a dude. dig it. lui lui

mmm, you know i love those vintage magazine covers. now, i think its safe to say that i've never had a copy of 'lui' in my hands, but it looks pretty groovy to me. hey, a swinging chick, a naked knee, a slice of cool watermelon... yum. i'm pretty tired, so i don't have too much to say about this, but i wanted to get at least one entry down for the night. i think i understand enough french to think it says its the magazine 'for modern man.' i hope i have something more meaningful to post in the next couple of days. until then, dig it.

spand-mag!

mmm, yes... glorious full-color teen mags from the 80's! first of all, i think its pretty funny that the title of this publication is '2001.' yeah, that date doesn't seen so wild and futuristic now, does it? (mmm, hey, hey eight years old.) i can't read the date on this, but since it mentions duran duran's 'singolo per 007,' then i'm assuming it was sometime in late 1985... coninciding with that garbage bond flick 'a view to a kill' that D2 did the title song for. (and yeah, i've seen that movie recently. christopher 'bleached hair' walken and grace jones? yeah, okay. actually, grace's acting chops impressed me more than roger moore's. seriously.) okay, so what else does this mag have to offer? hey, it boasts a 'tony hadley exclusive.' i guess you read that when you've got a serious case of 80's insomnia. (hey, who am i kidding? i'd love to read a tony hadley interview from late '85. there's no way it couldn't be hilarious. like, what if he's all ego-boasting that spandau ballet were the 'true future' of pop music in the modern world? like, that would be comedy 'gold.' ) okay, what else? it confusingly promises to feature the weirdly-alike-but-not-alike 'two nicks;' namely nik kershaw and nick heyward. like, which one was which again? oh wait, i just remembered... i don't care! so dig it. and if you have some spare time, see if you can dig up spandau's 'lifeline' or 'instinction' videos. both great. ( and 'musclebound,' and 'paint me down,' and the hilarious outfits in 'to cut a long story short.' glam kilts? i don't get it.) click to enlarge.

bowie smokes

hello lovers. hey, i don't have a whole lot of inspiration tonight... but i didn't want too many nights to go by without a post, so hey... dig this groovy lime-flavored shot of the great mr. david bowie, smokin' hot on the cover of a 70's rolling stone. man, thirty-some years ago. and he still looks alien-great now. i loved the way he looked around that time, with his 'man who fell to earth' styled orange hair. and those shades, they make him look 'lean and mean.' (?) and he also makes a dashing addition to my 'men smoking' thing. ummm, i wish i had something like, wicked-clever to say about it, but i don't really. i just think it looks real groovy. so um, dig it, and i hope i'll have more candy for you in the near future. mrs. starr

or was she mrs. starkey? well, we know for sure she was miss bach... miss barbara bach. and hey, i just learned last night after a little digging around, she's totally no relation to catherine bach; miss daisy duke. i remember thinking they were sisters or something, but apparently they're not... i found no evidence of that in my research. and yeah, i know what you're thinking; this picture doesn't even look like her... i mean, not at first glance, but its her, from her early days as a cover model. and we all know she had quite a movie career in the 70's... she was even a slinky, sexy bond girl... she played major anya amasova in the 1977 bond flick 'the spy who loved me.' she also turned up as a military femme fatale named maritza petrovich in 1978's 'force ten from navarone.' sometime around 1980, she met famous beatle drummer ringo starr, and the couple 'starred' together in the somewhat uneven, juvenile, but 'worth-a-look' stone age spoof 'caveman.' (1981) man, i haven't seen that movie in over 20 years. i wonder what i would think of it now? (i remember dennis quaid as an ice age caveman, peeing square ice cubes or something... ) anyway, i liked this shot of barbara... its a groovy magazine cover just on those merits alone. but hey, since she was a beatle wife too, i figured it was well worth a post. high sexy society

first of all, let me beg you all to not 'flag' me, they're only 'human boobs,' and therefore, not only scrumptious, but totally and absolutely harmless. that being said, i don't think jean-luc and i ever owned an issue of 'high society.' ours was like, a 99.9% 'penthouse-and-playboy' household. so i have no idea how 'highbrow' 'high society' actually was. but hey, judging by the classy and somewhat unclad cutie on the cover, i sure wouldn't say no if someone wanted to sling one my way-for-the-reading. this chick is both snazzy-and-hot! and you know the odds were overwhelming that she was 'non-plastic' in the boobs-area. i hope this enlarges a little so you can more closely appreciate her sass and hot 'dangerous curves.' hey, miss half-naked chick, where ever you are today, i thank you... for 'takin' it off for my eyes only.' (mmm, yeah i'm sure i'm the 'only' one who's seen this... like, she probably teaches sunday school somewhere now, hoping this old issue never makes it into the hands of one her little christian classmates.)

the famous beatles

hey, like a semi-famous beatles song says, '...i'm sooo tired,' tonight. like, i don't even feel like doing this right now. the Claw is in the room with me now. (don't ask.) so, as a result, i'm not feeling the usual 'vim' i have when i post. so like, bear with me when i post this! yes, its a shitty old fan magazine featuring the famous beatles, on the big cover. so um, let's take a closer look, shall we? well, firstly, i think its safe to say the photograph itself, sucks the big one. it boasts to tell us about '...paul's sleepless nights.' as if i care. like, what does paul have to lose sleep over? he seems like, not only the 'cutest,' but also, in general, the '...least concerned ' beatle.' and then we're promised that '...john confides in us now.' hey, you know, at that stage in his life, i'm not even sure john knew what in the hell was going on with his personal life. and apparently, george is going to come clean about his '...saddest moments.' and i think i probably have a pretty good idea what that was all about... namely: '...one damn song per record, you bastards...!?!' and, as if all that wasn't enough, '...ringo tells about love.' great.... fab, i can hardly wait to hear about it.

rebel with a cause

hey, i don't want to criticize miss jane fonda too harshly. i mean, nobody knows how it feels to be jane fonda except jane fonda. it couldn't have been easy to grow up as her. hey, i dig her the most! despite who her father is, was... i think she's worked damn hard all her life and has legitimately earned her stardom. sure, daddy might've been there to get her little foot in the door, but once she was in there, she more than proved she had 'the right stuff.' she's versatile, beautiful, feisty, demure, coquettish, calculating, shrewd, shy, sharp, and very sexy. like, sometimes i have to remind myself when i'm watching 'klute,' that she's also 'barbarella,' and judy bernley from '9 to 5.' (and to be honest, i never even think about her 'workout' days. i do like her in 'on golden pond,' though...) where was i? yeah... hot, swinging jane is always welcome to strut by the planet and join in the pillowfight.

wham it up!

hey, you know i still have that 'goodtime' slumber party jetlag, but i wanted to post something, just to mark my place. and i figured i couldn't go wrong with a well-preserved 'star hits' cover. this one is from june, 1984. and, as you can see, the cover boys are the blokes from wham! man, i know there was probably a time when i thought one-or-both of them was good-looking, but man, those days are over. i mean, a photo of a washer and dryer combo would give me a similar turn-on. now, don't get me wrong, i thought wham! made some pretty good music. i know i had the tape. and george michael, solo... that stuff was even better. but enough about the wham! lads, let's take a peek at the front-page features. hey, there's a free poster of a power station-era john taylor. hey, you know it was probably on it, my pink teenage wall. and there's also a julian lennon centerfold. i think i can bet a big wad of 'time travelin' cash money that that picture was NOT on my wall at any time. i never thought he was all that cute. and i still don't. then, near the bottom it says something about madonna in the movies. (little did we know then of the crap-ola to-come.) what else? mick jagger in bed? i don't think i knew any 80's-girls who cared at all about his 'dinosaur' photo opportunity. and i'm not even going to comment on david lee roth 'in the flesh.' looks like we also get some U2, and sade. not bad. but you can keep, keep, keep the alison moyet and simple (yeesh!) minds.

duran smash!

yes, its yet another 80's pop fan magazine! this one appears to be a smash hits from the year... well, it says october, 1981. and you can tell from the pic of the durans, who seem to be dressed like flash pseudo-soldiers of the scarf brigade. (?) lets see, who wins this 'ragged' horse race? at first glance, its looks like a three-way tie. (john, nick, and simon.) to be honest, i don't even see roger and andy when i look at this one. well, nick looks cute, but he can look cuter. and i think the same thing goes for john, so i think i'm gonna have to give it to the hot, headband-wearing simon le bon. i love the pose, and facially, he looks great. okay, with the horserace out of the way, lets see what else this cover boasts. actually, there's not much to poke fun at. most of the artists mentioned at the bottom are still pretty cool in my book. but the '3 way' poster fold-out including adam ant, spandau ballet, and the police is sort of funny. like, is it all on one like, piece of paper? hey, here's hoping you have enough teenage wallspace, roight! (click to enlarge)

idol ...worship?

no, i don't think i ever 'worshipped' billy idol. i think i can go as far as to say i did 'dig some of ' his stuff. so, i've been diving for fresh images all night, with 'kill bill' playing over my shoulder. so this might be the only thing i post tonight. i'd love to have more for you, but i've gotta replenish my stock sometimes. so i know i couldn't go wrong with a star hits cover. let's see... this one features 'stars in swimsuits.' and there's a shot of john 'skinnyshanks' taylor. i've seen him in a swimsuit. and then i woke up. what else? madonna showing her belly button. (som'm new for her, man...!) and hit songs from the nerds of 'tears for fears' and the non-group 'power station. (hey, i guess that's not fair. i mean, robert palmer and tony thompson were in that 'non'-group.) so dig it.

n is for new wave

again, i think this one speaks for itself. i wish people out there would make quality scans of all their old duran-era 'star hits,' 'smash hits,' 'tiger beat,' and like, i think there was one called 'no.1' in the UK. not only is the big headshot of john taylor really cute, but even more interesting if you 'click to enlarge,' are all the other features mentioned. for instance, i think i can read something about an 'a-ha contest,' AND a 'depeche mode contest.' what kind of contests could these have been? i mean, i guess you'd get records, posters, pins, and other junk. i'm quite sure i never entered one. i think, even at 14 years old i was like, '...hey, unless i get to meet-and-hang-out-with the band,' then i'm not going to bother.' oh, and by the way, the caption about: 'notice, no spandau' was added by me. ahhh, i wish i had been rich enough at the time to always buy two copies of 'star hits,' one to cut the pin-ups out of, and one to keep intact for posterity. actually, in retrospect, it was a high quality fan magazine, i mean, they really put a lot of work into each issue. (sorry the color is a little garish, i did the best i could.)

untold greta

yes, i've been re-digging on greta garbo these days. i've always loved her. i found this magazine cover and had to snag it. i love the way her face takes up the entire page, and i like the orange lettering. umm, i don't have too much else to say about it, except that its lovely. dig it. and love to all of you, lovers... who were patient when i wasn't posting anytime. i love you.
