j is for jobeth

jobeth williams, that is. i've never understood why jobeth didn't blossom into a bigger, more mainstream star. this is a still frame from 1979's 'kramer vs. kramer.' she played a librarian (i think) that dustin hoffman picks up for a one-night stand. most people forget she was great in 1980's 'stir crazy' as gene wilder's public defender. fortunately, however, she was unquestionably immortalized in the wild-scary 1982 tobe hooper ghost story 'poltergeist.' she played the hip and brave diane freeling. upon re-watching 'poltergeist' recently, jobeth (diane) is really the hero of the film. she's the one who takes the biggest risk and deals the most directly with the heavy-duty goings-on. she's really the 'dragonslayer,' if you think about it. i also loved her 'free love' ways in 'the big chill,' but after that, she regretfully fell out of the greater spotlight. i think that's a great loss. not only was (is) she beautiful, but she's also tough, smart, and damn good.
